BESS EXPO
EV + BESS IS ELECTRIFYING
The global Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) market size was valued at US $ 3270.06 Million in 2022 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.59% to be US $ 8644.19 million by 2028. The Government of India has approved the Scheme for Viability Gap Funding for the battery energy storage systems (BESS) industry, with a goal of developing 4000 MWh worth BESS projects by
2030-31.
The domestic Battery Market is poised to grow at CAGR @ 15% by 2027 and is directly proportionate to increasing demand of EVs in the country. India’s Annual Battery Market Could Surpass US $ 15 Billion by 2030 according to NITI Aayog Report | Mercom India. The market for recycled EV batteries in India is predicted to reach 128 GWh by 2030.
According to The Central Electricity Authority’s Optimal Energy Mix report – India’s BESS market set to soar to 208 GWh by 2030. India’s Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery market, which could surpass an annual value of US $ 15 Billion by 2030. Domestic EV sales are estimated to be over 9 million units by 2027 and India’s EV industry attracted an investment of US $ 6 Billion in 2021. It could rise to US $ 20 Billion by 2030.
With an initial BESS allocation of INR 94 billion (US $ 1.129 Billion), including budgetary support of INR 37.6 billion (US $ 451.95 Million), the BESS Scheme underscores the government’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions.
Niti Aayog projects EV sales to be 70% for commercial vehicles, 40% for buses and 80% for 2 and 4 wheelers by 2030. The EV industry is creating over 10 million direct and 50 million indirect jobs by 2030 – VCA-EY-Induslaw report.
EV Valuation at US $ 1.4 Billion in 2021 is expected to register a CAGR of 47.09 % during the FY 2022-2027. The Government has approved the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) to the ‘National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage’ for achieving manufacturing capacity of Fifty (50) Giga Watt Hour (Gwh).
The Government of India has notified the Phased Manufacturing Program (PMP) to promote indigenous manufacturing of EVs and components. The Union Budget for FY23 boosted the EV sector further by increasing the fund allocation for the FAME scheme over three-fold to US $ 365 Million.

INDUSTRY SCENARIO
The Indian BESS market is categorized into segments based on two key factors: battery type (including lithium-ion, lead-acid, flow, and other battery types) and connection type (on-grid and off-grid).
India’s battery energy storage systems market displays a moderate degree of fragmentation. Some key players are Toshiba Corporation, AES Corporation, Exide Industries Ltd, Delta Electronics Inc., and the Amara Raja Group. The global Electric Vehicle (EV) battery market alone is estimated to go full throttle from US $ 49.22 Billion in 2022 to US $ 98.97 Billion by 2029.
Internationally, country’s are committed to increasing electrification, decreasing dependence on fossil fuel imports and focusing on renewables to beat the green house emissions. All of which makes adoption of electric mobility worldwide an imperative.
India is committed not only to incentives for the transition to EVs, but is also focussing on increasing charging stations putting in place an EV ecosystem to meet its COP26 emission-free mobility and climate change obligations. All related sectors like EVs, Batteries, LED Lighting, etc. are bound to see rapid growth.
Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are factoring huge growth not just in the domestic market, but also globally for all products related to EVs and electric transportation.
